i don't want to be the kind of person who scares grown men with huge words and high heels, the kind of person who's always speedwalking and skipping breakfast and glancing at her watch, the kind of person who won't look a critic in the eye or admit that she's forgotten the answer (or maybe never knew it), the kind of person who ignores panhandlers and won't chip in and will never buy girl scout cookies, the kind of person who is respected from a safe distance, the kind of person who is too busy to play, too focused to notice, too experienced to listen, too comfortable to care. i want to be the kind of person you'd choose to be stuck with in a broken elevator or on a desert island, the kind of person whose diary you'd read for inspiration and/or comic relief, the kind of person to whom you'd entrust your kids (or secrets, or puppies), the kind of person you'd call when life just really rocks OR sucks, the kind of person whose jeans are torn and elbows are scabbed from waaay too much fearless living, the kind of person who bawls at sad endings and laughs when she trips and isn't scared to disagree, the kind of person whose lips may be slow but whose eyes are unwittingly honest. i don't want to be defined by my resume, my reading list, the contents of my mind or mouth...not even by the ideals i defend, the company i keep, the commitments i try (and fail) to honor...but rather by the grace i am given and compelled to embody.
